Biography

Prof. Neil Barnes, Global Respiratory Franchise, GSK, UK Neil Barnes is Medical Head of the Global Respiratory Franchise at GSK. Until October 2013 he was Consultant Respiratory Physician at London Chest Hospital, Barts Health NHS Trust and Professor of Respiratory Medicine at Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry, London, UK. He was joint R&D Director at Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry from 2005–2009. Prof. Barnes trained at Cambridge University and Westminster Medical School. He specialised in respiratory medicine at King’s College Hospital and the London Chest Hospital. His main clinical and research interests are in asthma, in particular, severe and difficult asthma and COPD. His research focuses on the mechanisms and pharmacology of asthma and COPD and clinical trial design and interpretation. Prof. Barnes has given invited lectures at most of the major respiratory meetings worldwide. He has served as Associate Editor for Thorax and has been a reviewer for a wide range of general and respiratory journals and has published over 250 peer-review papers, book chapters, editorials and reviews.
